Rotary Clubs of Grand Cayman join forces to launch Share the Road campaign

The Rotary Clubs of Grand Cayman have come together to launch a national road safety campaign entitled ‘Share the Road,’ aimed at encouraging road users to have respect for one another while on Cayman’s roads.

“All three clubs recognised the national importance of this campaign, and have therefore combined forces to ensure that its messaging is prominent, widespread and effective,” Dawn Cummings, Immediate Past President of Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise said. “Too many members of our clubs have had personal negative experiences on the road, or know family members or friends who have.”

The campaign has also drawn the support of the Ministry for Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure, the Governor’s Office, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and the National Roads Authority.

“Traffic offences in Cayman rose by 26% in 2016, with a total of 6,463 traffic related incidents reported last year and 6 fatalities on our roads, all large numbers for a small island like ours. But no matter the numbers, every death on our roads is one too many,” Ms Cummings said.

“Cayman prides itself on expressing kindness and showing mutual respect between ourselves and others and this sense of mutual respect should extend to our roads too,” Justin Bodden, President of Rotary Club of Grand Cayman said. “We celebrate being a multi-national, multi-cultural country. We are a varied group of different people from different backgrounds and with different road experiences and we all need to join forces to drive down the number of road traumas and accidents on Cayman roads.”

The campaign messaging will target all road users, including cyclists, pedestrians, drivers and motorcyclists, and will provide them with ways to keep themselves and others safe on the road. Presentations will also be given at schools and other community groups, and the RCIPS will assist with spreading the message to people as they are out on the road.

“A lot of the time road safety campaigns are only geared towards drivers, and don’t include or address other road users,” Mr Bodden said. “Share the Road aims to show that every road user has a part to play in keeping our roads safe, even if they are not in a motor vehicle.”

“It is so encouraging to have the support of key stakeholders in all aspects of road regulation. From those that are responsible for the planning, development and maintenance of our roads, to those that enforce the law and conduct vehicle inspections for roadworthiness, all the way through to those who are in charge of licensing and road signage, we are all joining forces to achieve better outcomes for all road users,” Khalesiah Barboram, Community Service Director of Rotary Central Cayman Islands said.

“With proper implementation and education, incidents could be significantly reduced, lives could be saved and Cayman could become a far less dangerous place to navigate,” Dr John Lee, Rotarian of The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise said. “This campaign aims to bring road users together and acknowledge the responsibility that comes with using Cayman’s roads.”

Hand, foot and mouth disease back in Cayman Islands

From bobFM

A common childhood illness is making the rounds once again in Cayman. Hand, foot and mouth disease is a viral illness that usually affects infants and kids under five years of age. It usually starts with a fever, but symptoms can also include painful mouth sores, and a skin rash on the hands and feet. The telltale signs of hand, foot and mouth – the sores and blisters – are certainly unpleasant and can cause alarm for parents, but the reality is that hand foot and mouth is usually a minor illness, that in most cases will clear up in a week to ten days. Dr. Christine Chen of TrinCay Medical Services told Cayman 27 it can be contagious even after the symptoms go away.

The number of illustrations in storybooks influences children’s word learning

From Medical Xpress

IMAGE: Credit: Wikipedia/CC

New research shows that the number of illustrations presented in a storybook can influence preschool children’s ability to learn words from shared reading.

The study of 3.5-year-olds shows that children learn significantly fewer words from storybooks with double page illustrations compared with story books with single spreads; however, this effect can be removed if the person reading the book to the child gestures to the appropriate page when reading.

The findings may help shape future storybook research design and provide a stark reminder that less is sometimes more.

“Preschool children love hearing stories, but because they do not yet read themselves, they sometimes don’t know where to look. As this study shows, it’s important to guide children with pointing and gestures if we want to use storybooks to help children learn words,” said Dr. Jessica Horst, co-author of the Infant and Child Development study.

Engine Issues Prompted Emergency Landing of Caribbean Airline Flight

By Rehani Isidore From St Lucia Online

A Caribbean Airlines flight was forced to land at the Hewanorra International Airport [HIA] in Vieux-Fort on Sunday July 9.

According to HIA sources, the pilot reported an engine fire before requesting clearance to activate emergency landing procedures.

The flight, carrying more than 60 passengers, landed safely on the HIA tarmac shortly after 3 pm.

First responders at HIA were alerted and responded promptly to the emergency. No injuries were reported.

Currently, the St. Jude Hospital, the primary healthcare facility in the south has been housed at the George Odlum Stadium since the original building was destroyed by fire in September 2009.

To date, conditions at the makeshift medical facility have deteriorated significantly raising questions about the capacity to manage large-scale medical emergencies.

Cayman Islands: RCIPS to display suspected stolen goods on Sunday, 16 July, at Elizabethan Square

During a recent search warrant operation, RCIPS officers confiscated a large amount of suspected stolen goods. The man arrested in the matter has been charged with Handling Stolen Goods and remanded to custody. However, detectives continue to try to determine the ownership of the property confiscated during the warrant.

In order to correctly identify ownership of the seized items, the RCIPS is arranging for members of the public who have had goods stolen from them during a theft or burglary to view the items this Sunday, 16 July in the Amerigo Building at Elizabethan Square on Shedden Road in Central George Town, from 10AM – 3PM.

Those who come to the viewing will need to bring some proof of ownership with them, in the form of a receipt or certificate of ownership along with the serial number of the item, or, in the case of several electronic items such as mobile phones or laptops, a password to unlock the device.

Items will not be returned to members of the public on the same day; certain processes need to be completed before items are returned. However, providing some proof of ownership as described will set those processes in motion.

Person with stolen items that are having trouble locating their information may try getting the serial number for the item(s) you purchased from the store of purchase. The detectives in charge also stated that if you can clarify any specific marking or damage that would be unique to your item(s), this would also be helpful.

A description of the type of items that will be displayed is as follows:

Laptops

Mobile phones

Watches

Televisions

Turntables – musical equipment

Construction Equipment – power tools etc.

Cayman Islands: Update on Missing Boaters Chadwick Bodden and Edward Henricks-Hydes

From RCIPS Tue July 11 2017

The two men Chadwick Bodden and Edward Henricks-Hydes still remain missing at this time.

Enquiries are ongoing to trace and locate the men and a number of enquiries are being followed up. The police are in regular communications with the families about the investigation.

We would like to thank the public for their information received thus far but would ask them to kindly refrain from passing on any information directly to family members of those missing without contacting the RCIPS first.

There have been occasions recently where I am sure good intentions were meant, however the nature of the information only caused further anxiety among the families of those missing.

Universe may hold 10 times more galaxies than once thought

By Jon Fingas From engadget

The observable universe was already incomprehensibly big, but it now looks to be even bigger. Astronomers have determined that are likely about 10 times more galaxies than previously thought, or between 1 trillion to 2 trillion. We just don’t have the technology (or physical proximity) to detect them all, according to the researchers. They reached the conclusion after converting Hubble Deep Field images into 3D to study the number of galaxies at a given point in the universe’s history, and using mathematical models to infer the possibility of galaxies that we haven’t spotted. Simply speaking, the volume of galaxies seen over time doesn’t make sense unless there are many we aren’t aware of.

Why don’t we see them? It may be a combination of our limited technology with the evolution of the universe itself. We can only do so much to account for redshifting (the light effect as objects move further away) and interference like cosmic gas, and that’s before accounting for the ever-changing nature of the cosmos. At least the data may help answer a key riddle. The shrinking number of galaxies supports the theory that galactic mergers are shaping the universe, radically reducing the overall galaxy count as more and more collisions take place.

It could be a long while before it’s possible to directly verify these calculations. There may need to be a dramatic improvement in telescope technology. And remember, even the 2 trillion figure likely doesn’t represent the whole universe. The very nature of light limits our ability to see the whole of existence — it’s possible that there are many, many more galaxies lurking out of range.

Appeals court panel rejects Hanes Caribe request

From Winsom-Salem Journal

A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday denied the request of a wholly owned subsidiary of Hanesbrands Inc., Hanes Caribe Inc., to reconsider its ruling on a sourcing contract that spanned from 2008 to 2013.

On June 5, the court denied Hanes Caribe’s request that a $36.3 million contract dispute be heard in the United States instead of Haiti, upholding a lower court’s June 16 ruling that “personal jurisdiction” over Global Manufacturers and Contractors SA didn’t exist in North Carolina.”.

GMC, based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is suing Hanes Caribe, which is based in the Cayman Islands “for alleged anomalies in compensation” in a sourcing agreement.

Hanes Caribe has said the appeals court “overlooked material facts” in the case, including that GMC executives came to Winston-Salem multiple times to continue and expand their partnership.
