GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) grouping has lauded the distinguished contribution of Jamaica to the world as the country celebrates its 55th anniversary of political independence from Britain on Sunday.

In a message marking the occasion, CARICOM Secretary General Irwin La Roque said Jamaica’s development has been fuelled by the “renowned creativity of its people,” since it attained nationhood in 1962.

He said Jamaica has achieved significant progress while maintaining the “highest standards of democracy and adherence to the rule of law.

LaRocque said the theme chosen to celebrate the event, “Celebrating Jamaicans at home and abroad” underscores the contribution that its citizens have made to making ‘Brand Jamaica’ one of the most recognisable globally.

“Jamaicans have distinguished themselves in sport, culture, business, academics and many other fields regionally and internationally.

“The basis for continued development has been laid and the Caribbean Community, of which Jamaica is a founding signatory and a leading member state, will maintain its support to the country’s efforts to achieve even greater levels of development,” he added.

Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, said among the highlights of the celebration will be a two-day fireworks display through a partnership with the Chinese government.

“Everybody comes to the Grand Gala to see the fireworks.

“Well, this year we have the most spectacular fireworks that have ever been seen in Jamaica and this has been made possible through collaboration with the People’s Republic of China and we are very grateful for their support. So, the Grand Gala fireworks will be spectacular and on the Monday (August 7), it will be even more explosive,” she said, urging nationals to come out and experience the fireworks.

“So, on Monday you can go downtown and experience an even more explosive display of fireworks,” she added.
