Last Sunday (12) was Remembrance Sunday when the Cayman Islanders remembered all those who gave up their lives to keep us safe from dictators for their love of their countries.

The day started cloudy and rain was threatening but it held off until the laying of the wreaths was completed around the Cenotaph (Memorial Cross) outside Elmslie Church on the waterfront. Then came the downpour and everyone scurried inside the church.

The laying of the wreathes that were meant for the Seaman’s Memorial had to be laid around the church altar and the closing ceremonies took place inside the church including the moving hymn O God Our Help in Ages Past”.

Participants at the ceremony included our veterans, seafarers, as well as church representatives and persons who paid their respects by laying wreaths at the Cenotaph and the Seamen’s Memorial.

Those who also attended the Ceremony included Her Excellency the Governor Helen Kilpatrick, CB; Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin, MBE, JP; Speaker of the House Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP, and Dep. Leader of the Opposition Alva Suckoo.

A parade started the event, led by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Band. Other contingents participating in the parade were the Cayman Islands Veterans Association, the Fire Service, Her Majesty’s Prison Service, Girls Brigade, the Scouts, Cadet Corps, the Seventh Day Pathfinders, the Lions Club of Grand Cayman, and the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens.

The ceremony began with the Royal Salute followed by the Bidding, and a two-minute Silence. After the sounding of the Last Post the wreaths were laid, the first one by HE The Governor followed by The Premier.
