The Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) says it is developing a strategic plan for the period 2018-2023 with stakeholder engagement being a top priority.

The CCJ, established in 2001 to replace the London-based Privy Council as the region’s final court, said that the planning period for developing the new plan would include sensitization activities and opportunities for contributions and feedback from a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

“I am pleased by the participatory nature of the ongoing exercise as it is my firm belief that all stakeholders should have the opportunity to contribute to guiding the strategic direction of the Court,” said CCJ President Sir Dennis Byron.

He said that the plan should be used as “a living, breathing roadmap for the CCJ’s operations.

“Our last strategic plan provided the foundation upon which we were able to achieve many things, including the Curia court management system, live broadcasting of court hearings, and our ongoing employee engagement programme.

“Most importantly, this planning process allows us to pause and take stock of where we are in the Court’s growth and development, so as to ensure that we remain on track to fulfil the mandate handed down to us by our Caribbean forefathers who advocated strongly for the Court’s existenc,” he added.

Professor of Leadership Studies in the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership Programme and Dean of the Fellows programme of the Institute for Court Management at the National Centre for State Courts in the United States of America, Dr. Daniel Straub, is leading the process which is intended to chart the Court’s operational direction over the next five years.

The CCJ said that Straub is uniquely qualified for this task “as he had steered the development of the CCJ’s first strategic plan from 2012 to 2017.
