Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism named as Caribbean Tourism Minister of 2017

Edmund Bartlett, the Minister of Tourism for Jamaica, has been named as the Caribbean Tourism Minister of the Year in the Caribbean Travel Awards 2017. The awards were judged by the editorial team of the Caribbean Journal website, who said that Mr Bartlett is an exceptional ambassador for the Caribbean region’s tourism sector and Jamaica’s national brand.

The Hon. Edmund Bartlett has been named as the Caribbean Tourism Minister of the year in the Caribbean Travel Awards 2017. Mr Bartlett is the Minister of Tourism for Jamaica.
The awards were judged by the editorial team from the Caribbean Journal website. The website covers all travel and tourism news across the whole Caribbean region.
The team from Caribbean Journal, explained their judgement stating:
“Being an effective tourism official in the Caribbean isn’t just about management and ideas.
“It’s about being an ambassador. And that’s exactly what Jamaica’s Edmund Bartlett has done so well in this, his most recent term as Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism.
“Bartlett, who spearheaded Jamaica’s hosting of the UNWTO Conference in Montego Bay last month, has become an exceptionally effective ambassador for the Caribbean tourism brand and Jamaica’s national brand.
“And that work is joined by Jamaica’s significant recent success in attracting new hotel investment, new airlift, and, most importantly, new visitors.”
Mr Bartlett has spent 35 years working in Jamaica’s political sector. He graduated from the University of the West Indies, where he majored in accounting. Prior to working in politics, he worked in various marketing, sales and accounting roles for multi-national companies. Mr Bartlett also represents Jamaica across the world, and he chairs the Board of Affiliate Members of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
During the Caribbean Travel Awards, the Ministry of Tourism also congratulated Jamaica’s Round Hill Hotel and Villas for scooping the Caribbean Hotel of the Year award, and Jewel Grande Montego Bay Resort and Spa for been recognised as the Caribbean Spa of the Year.
The Tourism Minister has helped Jamaica become one of the leading tourist destinations in the Caribbean. In December 2017, the tropical island nation welcomed its four millionth visitor that year. The visitor numbers broke records from the previous year, and the country’s tourism earnings reached US$3 billion by the end of the year.
Jamaica’s high tourism numbers are down to a number of factors, from improved cruise offerings, to new flights. A number of new hotels and resorts are currently under development on the island. An additional 15,000 guest rooms are expected to be added to the Caribbean nation by 2021, ranging from family run B&Bs and self-catering apartments, to luxury beachfront resorts and boutique hotels. Tourists can enjoy sweeping white sand, palm-fringe beaches, turquoise sea and lagoons, emerald-sloped mountains and hills, and cascading waterfalls.
