Snow bomb hits UK as temperatures plunge to -7C

Parts of the country have woken up to a thick layer of snow as plunging temperatures threaten more ice across the UK.

Severe weather warnings have been extended from Scotland and Northern Ireland to cover parts of northern England, Wales and the Midlands.

A snow bomb hit Scotland and snow showers are expected to continue across Northern Ireland and the far north of England with sleet and hail storms expected near to the coastal areas.

In areas which saw snow, temperatures dropped to between 0C – 2C. Tulloch Bridge in Scotland, had the largest snowfall with 8cm coming down overnight.

The Met Office warns that strong gale force Arctic winds will continue to blast northern parts of the UK as a yellow weather warning remains in place until Wednesday

The warning has been updated to increase the amounts of snow and impacts,’ the Met Office said.

Travel delays on roads are possible, as are public transport cancellations.

There is a chance of power cuts, while services such as mobile phone coverage may be affected.’
