From Insure My Trip

We would like to give you the most recent update on the U.S. Travel Alert system.

It has been changed to a Travel Advisory system.

You can read about it here on this new update:

We believe this is the most comprehensive page on the internet about Travel Alerts and Travel Warnings.

It literally covers everything from understanding what the difference is between Travel Alerts and Warnings, when these are issued, when they are updated, and as much deep information as we could find from our experts to help travelers inform and protect themselves.

We are updating it regularly to keep it as current as possible. See below:

International incidents have motivated us as a travel insurance company to provide a centralized source of information on the travel alerts and warnings. On January 10, 2018, the U.S. Department of State replaced its decades old program of Travel Alerts and Warnings with a new Travel Advisory System. Learn more on the new Travel Advisory System here. User confusion over the previous Travel Alerts and Warnings System prompted the formation of a new Travel Advisory System for the United States. The new tiered type system ranks every country based on its current safety and security conditions, and how it may affect U.S. citizens worldwide.

Countries are now ranked in levels, between 1 and 4:

  • Level 1 being the safest – encouraging just the standard precautions on international travel
  • Level 2 as slightly risky – requiring increased caution from travelers
  • Level 3 for those countries with life-threatening risks in specific parts of the country
  • Level 4 critical destinations.

The rank assigned to each country is dependent on the risk indicators existing and imminent in their territories during the assessment periods. There can be more than one risk indicator per country at a time, which can also be removed when the threat or situation has been contained.

Risk Indicators are classified as:

  • C – Crime
  • T – Terrorism
  • U – Civil Unrest
  • H – Health Hazards
  • N – Natural Disaster
  • E – Time Limited Events
  • O – Others

The information below was up-to-date with the previous Travel Alerts and Warnings system from the U.S. Department of State and can be used for historical research.
