Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee launches Kirkland Nixon Memorial Fire Truck Pull
From RCIPS
The Cayman Islands Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics (LETR Cayman Islands), a committee which consists of officials from the RCIPS, HM Customs, the Department of Immigration, the Cayman Islands Fire Service, and Special Olympics Cayman Islands (SOCI), is excited to announce the first annual Kirkland Nixon Memorial Fire Truck Pull. The Pull is being organized as a fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics Cayman Islands, as they prepare for the Special Olympics National Games which take place from 3 – 8 June. The event is also intended to raise awareness about the Special Olympics and SOCI initiatives.
The Fire Truck Pull will take place on Saturday, 26 May, from 9:00AM-1:00PM on the grounds of the Grand Harbour Shopping Centre. It will involve teams of 12, representing both government departments and corporate entities, as they compete to see who can pull a fully loaded fire truck across a distance of 15 feet in the fastest time. There will be an overall winner in each of the two categories, and a final “pull off” where the top two teams compete for the annual trophy.
“As we came together this year to relaunch the LETR, our former Fire Chief, Mr. Kirkland Nixon, passed,” said Rodney Rivers of the Cayman Islands Fire Service. “He was always a big supporter of the Special Olympics and also arranged Fire Truck Pulls during his tenure, and we believe this is the perfect way to pay tribute to him. This event mirrors his values of service to community.”
LETR Cayman Islands, which is a local branch of the worldwide LETR organization, has been dormant for the past few years, and is being relaunched with this Fire Truck Pull, with other activities to follow.
“It is a pleasure to see the Law Enforcement Torch Run get back up and running after being on a bit of a hiatus over the last few years,” said RCIPS Inspector Ian Yearwood, who is interim chairperson of the committee. “These activities allow us the opportunity to join together as law enforcement agencies to support a very worthy cause.”
“All of us here at Special Olympics Cayman are delighted to see the revival of the Torch Run and Fire Truck Pull,” said Adrian Lynch, chair of Special Olympics Cayman Islands. “We really appreciate the support of our local law enforcement agencies in helping to raise awareness and funds for our Special Olympics athletes.”
