Mia Mottley Elected First Female Prime Minister of Barbados as Labour Party Wins Election
From teleSUR
The BLP attacked the current government on its policy of high taxation and focused on the cost of living during the campaign

The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has won the country’s 2018 General Elections claiming all 30 seats in the country’s House of Assembly and unseating theDemocratic Labour Party (DLP), which has governed the country since 2008.

The crushing victory for the BLP means that its political leader Mia Amor Mottley will be sworn in as Barbados’ first female Prime Minister since the country gained independence from Britain in 1966.

Mottley, 52, becomes Barbados’ eight Prime Minister and the fifth female head of government in the English speaking the Caribbean joining the likes of the late Dame Eugenia Charles of Dominica,Janet Jagan of Guyana, Portia Simpson Miller in Jamaica and Kamla Persad Bissessar in Trinidad and Tobago.

The result brings the Caribbean island’s controversial election day and campaign to a decisive end with the BLP securing the broadest electoral victory in the country’s history and with a mandate, which allows them to make changes to the constitution and implement other reforms promised during the campaign. On election day there were a series of complaints with multiple citizens stating that they were unable to find their names on the voters’ list with some having to seek to go to the courts to have their names added to the list of Register of Electors at the last minute. Citizens were also forced to wait into the wee hours of Friday morning for the result after a delay in the counting of ballots.

China’s payment apps scare U.S. bankers: Bloomberg

|By: , SA News Editor

The popularity of Alibaba’s (NYSE:BABA) Alipay and Tencent Holding’s (OTCPK:TCEHY) WeChat have changed payment systems in China, allowing consumers to pay for goods with their phones without credit or debit cards or checking accounts.

Why is that scary to U.S. bankers? If similar app-based systems gain ground in the U.S., banks will no longer be reaping the processing and handling fees they’ve become accustomed to–what could amount to a $43B hit to revenue,  Bloomberg reports.

The impersonal internet

By Paul McGowan From PS Audio

I spend a great deal of time on the forums and comments section of our channels: Ask Paul, Ohms Law, Paul’s Post, PS Forums, YouTube, Copper Magazine, Facebook.

I do this because the internet can be an impersonal place if you let it. Just look at some of the more untended channels and you’ll see they’ve degraded into shouting matches and hate filled comments of no value to anyone—like weeds taking over a vacant lot or graffiti defacing an abandoned building.

It’s as if people are warning others to stay away. The ground here is no longer fertile.

Each of our community outreach channels is like a garden. Tended to and cared for it grows and flourishes, providing sustenance to a community hungry for a place to gather and tip glasses together in friendship. A place to learn and share.

If we care enough to devote our time and energies to something, our great community is eager to respond in kind.

It’s one of high-end audio’s core strengths and I thank each and every one of you for it.

Website for Caribbean events and festivals debuts

By Gay Nagle Myers From Travel Weekly

A new online portal for events and festivals scheduled throughout the Caribbean was recently launched to provide agents with a resource to help plan their clients’ vacations.

Caribbeanevents.com features more than 200 events, with new ones added daily across the region. The calendar provides information on culinary, cultural, musical and other events, listed by date, island and event type.

“The Caribbean has a reputation for some of the world’s most authentic festivals and events each year,” said Nerdin St. Rose, founder of the website. “We developed this resource to provide a platform to promote these events, while also providing travel planners with up-to-the-minute information that can enhance clients’ trips to the region.”

Organizers and planners can submit information directly onto the site at no cost in the initial phase. Destinations can list events for free, with fuller details and live links at a nominal cost.

Additional features include opportunities for hotels and destinations to add customized content that include homepage features, video and direct links for ticket sales.

The hot events happening at Cayman Islands Kimpton Seafire

By Danna Kaplan

All locals on the island, you know better than anyone that the Cayman Islands is where you want to be when the sun goes down and the music turns on. This summer, head to Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa for all things fiesta-focused. A quick trip to the property is guaranteed to bring surprises and we’ve detailed a few of our favorite happenings so you don’t have to:

Every Tuesday, Seafire brings a little fiesta to the island with Tacos y Tequila at Cocoloba from 5-9 PM. Groove to live music paired with as many $8 margaritas and $5 tacos you can handle. Margaritas feature seasonal ripe fruits from a local farmers market each week (think guava, starfruit, naseberries, mamey or pineapple). Plus, unobstructed views of Seven Mile Beach means a front row seat for the sunset. Make sure you stop by and celebrate each week.

Get the weekend started with First Fridays: Catch the beat with tunes straight from the DJ, and enjoy delicious treats for some late-night munching. Each event will have a different theme – Next event is set for June 1 (May is canceled due to Carnival!). The energy of the crowd gets started at AVE at 10PM and runs until 1AM.
