Cayman Islands Youth Development Consortium celebrates 10 years
This year will be 10 years since the Cayman Islands Youth Development Consortium started the Fearless Xtreme leadership and Prevention camp, with the support of the governor at the time, Mr. Stuart Jack. We started out targeting young people ages 13-17, however I adjusted the age 10-17 when my nephew complained that we were not catering to his age. Since 2016 we adjusted the camp to accommodate age 7 to 14 and those who are older are invited back as leaders. Each year there are presentations on making right choices and the attendees are introduced to the developmental assets that help them to succeed. The five youth problem behaviors such as violence/ bullying, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, delinquency and school drop out are addressed. Over the years various governmental agencies had been involved to help with these presentations. Agencies such as the National Drug Council, Health Services Authority, Family Support Unit etc.
Along with the big support of governor Stuart Jack, ATC Trustees and Queensgate were the first to financially support this camp. Queensgate has continued as an annual contributor and Cayman National has been contributing for several years since they came on board. This program is also supported by CIYDC’s Project 365 corporate contributors and in-kind donors. The camp in recent years has received an injection of funds through a purchase agreement with government. The in-kind or discounted use of government buildings help alleviate the cost and thus the camp is cost effective at $75 per week.
The main idea of the camp is to empower and motivate young people to be actively involved as asset builders in their school and community. The theme of this year’s camp is MAKING AN IMPACT! Part of this year’s camp is setting up an asset village, an Xtremes Got Talent show, the annual beach Olympics and Xtreme day.
