Student Colloquium at Caribbean Week in New York

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, 20 June 2018 — Students from the Cayman Islands School of Hospitality Studies (SHS) earned 2nd place in the annual Caribbean Student Colloquium as part of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Caribbean Week events on June 6th in New York. SHS students submitted a business proposal for a sustainable Caymanian themed village called Cocoplum.

Tertiary level student teams from the Caribbean were invited to submit business proposals for a tourism-related project in their country. Four finalist schools were then invited to present their idea to a panel of judges. Cayman’s SHS team earned the 2nd place title, with University of the Bahamas 3rd and Jamaica University of Technology placing 4th. Once again securing 1st place was a team of Caribbean students from upstate New York’s Monroe College.

As stated on the CTO website, the Colloquium is designed with three main goals:
To serve as a catalyst for creativity through competitiveness and scholastic research
To enhance in-class learning among students by heightening sensitivity to sustainable initiatives in the Caribbean
To provide a platform for understanding the Caribbean tourism product and contributing to its development as a world-class destination

This was the second consecutive year the Cayman Islands have competed in this event.
