Cayman Islands police holds 2017 Outstanding Service Award Ceremony, 29 June

Last night, Thursday 28 June, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) held its annual Outstanding Service Awards Ceremony at the Cayman Islands Government House (the Governor’s Residence).

The ceremony highlighted the efforts of officers who performed exceptionally throughout the 2017 calendar year, as well as support staff and community members who contributed significantly to public safety. The awards covered a wide range of categories, including: Diversity Award, Welfare Officer of the Year, Support Staff of the Year, Auxiliary Constable of the Year, Special Constable of the Year, Unit Citation Award, Community Spirit Award and Police Officer of the Year. Awards and recognition, in the form of a Humanitarian Award, were also presented to the 62 officers who provided emergency security and humanitarian relief to our sister territories, the British Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands, during and after these territories were devastated by hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The RCIPS expresses gratitude to His Excellency the Acting Governor Mr. Franz Manderson, who attended and delivered a speech to the BVI and TCI Contingents of officers, and presented awards to them and other awardees throughout the ceremony.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Anthony Ennis, who spearheaded the planning of this event, spoke about the Diversity Award and the Welfare Award, and acknowledged the winners: Auxiliary Constable Fabian O’Connor from the Community Policing Department (Diversity Award) and Tiffany Rankine from the Scenes of Crime Unit (Welfare Award), and runners-up Police Constable Christopher Donaldson of the Community Policing Department (Diversity Award) and Detective Inspector Kevin Ashworth (Welfare Award). The awards were presented by the Commissioner of Police Mr. Derek Byrne.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kurt Walton described the Community Spirit Award and the Unit Citation Award and also acknowledged the winners: Mr. Alfredo Powery from the District of West Bay who assisted the Community Policing Department in clean-up projects by donating his equipment and services to the police on several occasions (Community Spirit Award); and the Criminal Investigation Unit (CID) for their adaptability and perseverance throughout the year (Unit Citation). The runners-up Ms. Sabrina Turner from the Prospect Community for her work with the community officer for the Prospect Beat. She has made tremendous crime prevention efforts. Two units of the police tied for runner up in the unit citation, the Air Operations Unit and the Joint Marine Unit.

The Commissioner of Police Mr. Derek Byrne described the Police Officer of the Year Award, The Auxiliary Officer of the Year Award, The Support Staff of the Year Award and the Special Constable of the Year Award; and acknowledged the winners and runner ups for each category. The winners were presented to by H.E the Acting Governor. The Police officer of the Year Award was presented to PC Christopher Donaldson (Community Policing Department – beat officer for Prospect) and both PC Eugene Myles (Community Policing Department) and APS Peter Maragh (Tactical Firearms Unit) tied for runner up in this category. The Auxiliary Constable of the Year Award was presented to AC Shawn Bazil (Custody Unit) and the runner up for this category was AC Fabian O’Connor (Community Policing Department). The Support Staff of the Year award was present to Ms. Monique Burton (Process Department) and Mr. Wayne Bobb-Semple (IT Department) who tied for first place and the runner up was Ms. Veronica Cole (Communications Unit). The Special Constable of the Year Award was presented to SC Willian Petit and the runner up for this category was SC Capt. Arlond Brooks.

The RCIPS would like to thank all the guests who attended the ceremony to celebrate our staff and community members, with special mention to H.E. the Acting Governor, the ministers, heads of departments and person who participated in the ceremony. The RCIPS is also grateful to the Governor’s Officer for all their assistance with this event. Thank you also to the members of the public who sent nominations to the RCIPS for each category. The support from the public for the awards were astonishing.
