5 islands in the Caribbean where you’ll be killed for committing certain crimes
By Farida Dawkins From Face2Face Africa
Last Wednesday, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in Barbados outlawed capital punishment for murderers, deeming it unlawful.
The High Court is no longer able to enforce the death sentence for those in Barbados found guilty of murder.
The CCJ decided that Section 11 of the Constitution – which allows for protection under the law was enforceable and that “the mandatory death penalty breached that right as it deprived a court of the opportunity to exercise the quintessential judicial function of tailoring the punishment to fit the crime.”
Despite the island’s changed stance on capital punishment, there are Caribbean islands who still carry out death sentences as punishment for certain crimes.
Saint Lucia
A murder charge or an act of treason can result in death for the perpetrator.
The last known execution was committed in 1995.
Saint Kitts & Nevis
The execution of Charles Elroy LaPlace on December 19, 2009, prompted Amnesty International to deem the act as “a shameless human rights development for the country after 10 years of moratorium.” The mode used for the killing was hanging.
Cause of imposition of the death penalty is treason and murder.
Jamaica
An act of murder in Jamaica can land you a long sentence with an overcrowded and torturous stay in prison.
As of 2004, it was reported that 40 people were on death row. The last execution happened in 1986.
Guyana
Armed robbery, drug trafficking, murder, piracy and terrorist acts that result in death are offences that can land you on death row in Guyana.
As of 2003, 20 individuals were on death row although none had been executed
Dominica
If you commit treason or aggravated murder in Dominica and are found guilty, your execution will be carried out by hanging.
Though the death penalty has been labeled as unconstitutional, it has not been removed from the constitution. The last execution was carried out in 1986.
