Over the past two weeks, operations conducted by the Joint Task Force, comprised of RCIPS and Customs officers, have resulted in the interdiction of almost 700lbs of ganja (with an estimated street value ranging from $250,000 to $560,000) along with several arrests.
On Tuesday, 19 June, officers intercepted a vessel carrying drugs near Smith Barcadere in South Sound and arrested 5 local males. A quantity of ganja, with a net weight of 467lbs, was recovered during the operation. One of the men was formally charged with Possession of Ganja with Intent to Supply, appeared in court and has been remanded into custody until 10 July.
On Saturday, 23 June, a boat carrying drugs was intercepted off East End and two men of Bodden Town were arrested. A quantity of ganja with a net weight of 222lbs was recovered during this operation. Both men were charged with Being Concerned in the Importation of Ganja and related offenses, appeared in court and were remanded into custody until 12 July.
Today [July 6] the RCIPS is releasing photos of some of the ganja recovered in these operations.
“These operations are further examples of the results that can be achieved through interdepartmental cooperation,” said Commissioner of Police, Derek Byrne. “We are committed to working with our partner agencies to target and prosecute those who continue to import and deal in illicit drugs, which results in all forms of criminality throughout the island.”
“Our closer cooperation with the RCIPS in recent months as a joint task force is yielding consistent results,” said Charles Clifford, Collector of Customs, “these latest operations are examples of how, working together, we are disrupting criminal enterprises in drug dealing, gambling and other illegal activities around the islands with increasing frequency.”
