Venezuelan flagged aircraft impounded by Guyanese authorities

By Dennis Adonis From Guyana Guardian
Georgetown, Guyana – Authorities in Guyana are investigating the arrival of a suspicious private charter aircraft that landed at the Cheddie Jagan International Airport, Timehri, just after 3pm yesterday.

The aircraft is branded with a Venezuelan flag on its tail fin, which is a standard icon attached to carriers that are assigned to a particular country.

The identities or the whereabouts of the passengers that the private aircraft was carrying remains a mystery.

In a release to the media, the Guyana Police Force says that subsequent to the aircraft’s arrival, ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit conducted an initial evaluation of the carrier, which resulted in the unearthing of several irregularities.

Authorities say that among other things, the registration number on the aircraft was false, while its Data Plate was missing, thus signaling that the operator(s) of the aircraft were bent on hiding all of its original identifiable details.

As a matter of fact, the airplane’s registration number belongs to another aircraft, confirming to investigators that its particulars were fraudulently cloned.

As a result, the higher echelons of the police force and other relevant State entities were informed, and a decision was made to widen their probe of the aircraft.

According to the police, the pilot and passengers aboard the aircraft claimed that they were invited to Guyana by a Michael Brassington, who was at the airport at the time to receive them.

Documents presented by the parties have also identified their handling agent in Guyana as Roraima Airways, an aviation company that is own by Captain Gerry Gouevia.

Nonetheless, as a result of the irregularities discovered on the aircraft, a decision was made by the Guyanese authorities to impound it.

It remains unclear as to whether any of the passengers or pilot were also detained.

Investigations are ongoing.
