From RCIPS

With the upcoming school year approaching, the RCIPS would like to remind the public of some traffic issues that impact road safety during morning commuting, especially in the Eastern Districts.

Motorists are reminded that between the hours of 7AM and 8:30AM, the Poindexter Road way will be closed to all motorists, except those who live in the Prospect area and those with children going to school in that area. This is due to a large number of complaints from the residence of the Prospect Area regarding poor traffic conditions and speeding in the residential areas.

Motorists are also reminded that speeding in school zones will not be tolerated, as this poses a risk to the safety of the children and other road users. Fines for speeding in a school zone is also double the regular rate at CI $40 per mile over the speed limit that you travel.  All school zones are equipped with signage and most have a pedestrian crossing.

Parents and guardians are also reminded to ensure that their little ones are strapped into the car properly when travelling with them. Motorists are asked to pay attention to school buses during their travels and are reminded that going around a school bus or crossing its path during the time that it is picking up or dropping off students is not only illegal but dangerous.

Acting Police Sergeant with the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit, A/PS Alain Belanger states “If you live in areas such as the Eastern Districts and are going into the George Town district, you should plan to leave home earlier than you have during the summer months. The reason for this is that there will be more cars travelling in the same direction at the same time on the week days during the school days.”

The aim of the RCIPS is to first and foremost work towards making the roadway safer for all road users and to ensure that the laws are adhered to. The public can expect to see an increase in police presence in the school zone areas as we will be monitoring them closely in the coming weeks.
