A second aid worker who had been kidnapped by Boko Haram for several months was killed on Wednesday after a negotiation deadline expired, according to CNN.

Midwife Hauwa Mohammed Liman, 24, was killed by her captors after the first aid worker she was kidnapped with was killed in September.

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the killing was”dastardly, inhuman and ungodly” since “nothing can justify the shedding of the blood of innocent people.”

She was kidnapped with two International Committee of the Red Cross (IRC) workers in March this year when a faction of Boko Haram attacked a military facility.

She had been working as a nurse in a hospital supported by the ICRC in a displacement camp in the town of Rann, outside Maiduguri in Borno State.

Liman was the second aid worker murdered in as many months after Saigura Hussaini Khorsa, 25, was also killed.

The ICRC first said it did not have independent confirmation of her death, but later released a statement which said it did receive information that indicated Lim was killed during “a despicable act of cruelty.”

“The news of Hauwa’s death has broken our hearts,” said ICRC’s Regional Director for Africa, Patricia Danzi in a statement. “We appealed for mercy and an end to such senseless murders. How can it be that two female health care workers were killed back-to-back? Nothing can justify this.”
Lai Mohammed said government officials maintained lines of communications with her captors and always had the “best interest” of the hostages in mind when they took action.

”It is very unfortunate that it has come to this,” Mohammed said.

“Before and after the deadline issued by her abductors, the Federal Government did everything any responsible government should do to save the aid worker,” he said, adding that, the government will continue working to free the remaining hostages.

A spokeswoman for ICRC in Nigeria Aleksandra Matijevic Mosimann told CNN they had received an ultimatum in mid-September from the Boko Haram group which threatened schoolgirl Leah Sharibu, whose parents described her abduction as “facing a death sentence, but the ICRC does not negotiate with terrorists.

The ICRC said the healthcare worker was “a sociable, dynamic and enthusiastic woman who was much loved by family and friends. She was truly dedicated to her work helping vulnerable women in her family’s home area.”

Boko Haram fighters working in the northeast region of Nigeria have waged a decades-long insurgency in the region using tactics including gunmen and suicide bombers.

Nearly 3,000 aid workers, many of them Nigerian nationals, also work in the area.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari said he spoke to Mohammed’s father Mohammed Liman, to console with the family on Tuesday after the government did everything possible to save their daughter’s life.

“It is tragic and regrettable that all our efforts were unsuccessful,” Buhari said.

“Hauwa dedicated herself to serving the victims of Boko Haram’s insurgency, and it is extremely sad that her life ended the way it did, at the hands of the terrorists. I expressed our deepest condolences to her father, on behalf of the Government and all the people of Nigeria,” the president tweeted.
