“Lord what a day”

“Lord what a day; look at the displays”, is part of the chorus of a Jamaica Farewell folk song that students from Little Cayman Education Centre (LCES) took and made their own during the opening ceremony of the second annual Little Cayman Agriculture Show on Saturday.

About 350 people attended the event throughout the day and purchased most of the 1,800 fruits, plants, herbs or seedlings the Department of Agriculture brought over to sell and help promote backyard farming. In addition to the plant sale, there were lots of food and other items on sale. Entertainment throughout the day included Mel McCoy’s ‘Localz Band’, ‘D Government Band’, a demonstration by Law Enforcement and Emergency Services and Dog Show. Mr. Johnny Johnson provided tractor rides.

Mr. Franklin Bodden and Mirelda Messias were crowned King and Queen of Little Cayman Agriculture Show respectively. The Minister’s Special Awards for Agriculture Spirit – Youth went to Little Cayman Education Services students. In the adult category of the Minister’s Special Award, Debbi Truchan, the chairperson of the Little Cayman Agriculture Show, took top honours.

The show was held at the Little Cayman Museum and Marine Museum Grounds, an appropriate venue, with its perfect blend of the past and what Acting Premier and Minister responsible for Agriculture Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly hopes will be the future for agriculture on the island.

Ms. O’Connor-Connolly officially declared the event open and congratulated Little Cayman’s Agriculture Show organising committee, vendors and sponsors for making the event a success.

In addition to presenting the family of Mr. Linton Tibbetts with an award, the Acting Premier and officials honoured the Mr. Tibbetts’ family by planting a Nam Doc Mango tree in Mr. Tibbetts Garden of Eden, located on the Museum grounds.

“Agriculture is alive and well in Little Cayman. It is good to see that everyone here grows a little bit of something and the Agriculture Show promotes the growing attitude amongst the population,” she said.

Also attending the function in an official capacity was MLA Moses Kirkconnell, Chief Officer of District Administration, Works, Lands and Agriculture Alan Jones, Director of Agriculture Adrian Estwick, District Commissioner Ernie Scott, Little Cayman District Officer Larry Scott, DAWL&A Acting Deputy Jonathan Jackson and Deputy District Commissioner Mark Tibbetts.

LFES teacher Veronica Kahn won the $1,000 first prize in the raffle.
