Fireworks Ltd Fireworks Certification Course
Fireworks Ltd, Cayman’s leading commercial display and retail fireworks’ company, recently hosted a certification course for its display technicians, key management staff, and officers of the Cayman Islands Fire Service and Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. The course was delivered by Mr. Gregg Smith, Safety Programme Manager, American Pyrotechnics Association (APA). Fireworks Ltd is the only Cayman Islands display fireworks’ company with membership in APA, the pre-eminent industry trade association.
“Safety is the first line of business we are in. The artistry, excitement, and beauty of a fireworks show is secondary”, noted David Kirkaldy, President of Fireworks Ltd. “Having the APA visit us here in Cayman for this class rather than send technicians to the USA afforded us an opportunity to certify more personnel, but more importantly engage with the law and safety agencies that we interact with as a company to better explain to them what we do and the things they should be aware of.”
The 6 hour course covered history of fireworks, manufacture techniques, safe handling, storage, and preparation procedures, and many other aspects of safe technique. The class reconvened in the evening for a small practical demonstration shoot. This practical session illustrated good setup and site management techniques, and affording the opportunity for all participants to electronically fire several shells. The course was offered free of cost to the Fire Service and RCIPS officers.
In addition to the certification course, Mr. Smith toured many of the shoot locations used locally to offer advice on each related to safety or contingency planning. He also inspected the storage for retail (Class C or 1.4g) and display (Class B or 1.3g) fireworks.
Attending the class from Fireworks Ltd / Massive Group were David Kirkaldy (President), Dennis Verhoeven (Financial Controller), Dara Pereira (Operations Manager), Rowan Thomas, Steven Williams, Cornelius Jordan, and Norman Munroe. Attending from Cayman Islands Fire Service were Clay Ebanks and Tina Choy. Attending from the Royal Cayman Islands Police were Inspector Ian Brellisford and PC Anthony Stewart.
“It was good visiting Cayman in support of our APA member Fireworks Ltd”, said Gregg Smith. “They have a commitment to this business, shown in the effort taken to plan the class. It was great to have the public safety professionals join us also as it helps them understand what we do in our rather unique business, and allows us to work more proactively with them in addressing any concerns they may have.”
The support of the CI Fire Service as standby service at our shows (and at the demo show) is greatly appreciated. Fireworks Ltd also extends thanks to the CAA and the Air Traffic Control Tower for the good working relationship we have. These agencies, together with the RCIPS work with us to ensure safe displays for the community, property, and pilots.
