Redemption: An Easter Celebration of Love
By: Colleen McGaw
Sunday morning, 1 April, saw the Savannah United Church filled to capacity as their Easter Cantata was presented. The 27 member choir, the children’s choir, and the male voice choir all did their part to ensure a wonderful experience was had by everyone present.
The Cantata included narration by Gaynel Callender, Caroline Hunter, Al Aaron, and various members of the choir. The choir was in fine voice, with many soloists adding to the richness of the performances. As usual, Noel Wallace, Music and Youth Director of the church, did an excellent job. It was obvious that everyone had put a great deal of time and practice to produce such a wonderful presentation.
Everyone enjoyed the children’s choir. The children arrived waving palm branches, as they walked down the aisles of the church. They sang beautifully and swayed to the music as they sang. They were led by Kimia Hemmings who had done an excellent job with them as they knew all the words and actions necessary to make a great performance. Not only did they sing alone but they also participated in the finale with the choir.
Not to be outdone, the male voice choir (which also benefited from the voice of Rev. Donovan Myers) gave a heartfelt rendition of ‘No Other Word For Grace’,
One of the highlights of the service was the playing of ‘The Old Rugged Church’ by Kenneth Melville. The surprise was that he used a carpenter’s saw and bow. The sounds that he was able to generate were superb – something that we will all remember for a very long time.
For those who were unable to attend this moving presentation, be sure to mark it on your calendar for next year.
