EARTH DAY CELEBRATION AT CAMANA BAY: PUBLIC INVITED TO SEE INDUSTRIAL GLASS PULVERIZER IN ACTION

Celebrate the earth and learn how we can help to make Cayman an even better place to live at Camana Bay.’s Earth Day Celebration on Wednesday 18 April from 2- 7pm. The celebration will coincide with Camana Bay.’s popular Farmers.’ Market, which takes place every Wednesday at the Market Street Pavilion. This free event will feature environmental displays, a variety of vendors offering local produce and eco-friendly products and a myriad of educational opportunities for children and adults alike.

The public is invited to bring glass to be crushed by Camana Bay.’s new glass pulverizer, situated alongside the regular glass and aluminum recycling station next to the Pavilion. The lack of glass recycling in most parts of the island is a sizable waste problem for Cayman .– according to Dart.’s landfill experts, glass represents approximately 10 per cent of all waste generated in Cayman. With the capacity to crush 1,500 pounds of glass per hour, glass waste is pulverized in mere seconds to grains as soft as sand.

At the Farmers.’ Market, visitors can sample a delicious range of local produce and homemade goods from a host of local vendors. From sausages, banana bread and pepper jelly to local crafts, plants and produce, the flavour is uniquely Caymanian. Eating locally-grown produce is a great way to be green as it eliminates the need for food to be shipped or flown to our Islands. It also helps to support our farmers and improves our ability as a nation to feed ourselves .– plus it.’s delicious!

After stocking up on local produce, shoppers can visit the Camana Bay Green Team and Arboretum to learn new waste-reducing tips and practices. Learn how to protect indigenous plant species and make your own compost; horticulturists from the Arboretum will be giving away native seedlings as well as their gardening expertise in honour of .“Plant Something Day.”, which is celebrated next Wednesday in Cayman. The Green Team will show you how easy it is to be green on island and best practices for reducing waste at home.

There will be a host of eco-friendly products for sale by local vendors, and Camana Bay.’s newest addition, Bay Market, will be on site to showcase its range of eco-friendly household products. Cartridge Smart will offer advice on energy conservation and Electratech will present its range of clean energy solutions. Learn more about Cayman.’s beautiful ecosystem and mangrove forests from Sea Elements .– and discover how you can help to preserve them with The National Trust. Find out about recycling options on island through Recycling Services, and discover an alternative use for your garbage with local artist Kaitlyn Elphinstone, who will display her recycled art.

Cayman Automotive will be displaying its range of electric cars. As gas prices continue to soar, electric vehicles are emerging as the cars of the future. And with the Government pushing to reduce the import duty on these vehicles, they will be not only a green choice, but also an economical choice for Cayman.’s drivers and a great way to keep our Islands clean.

Little ones will be entertained by bean bag toss, eco-friendly crafts and interactive displays from Jean- Michael Cousteau.’s Ambassadors of the Environment, which will also be selling sustainable products such as magazine bowls and candy wrapper purses.

The celebration will finish in Gardenia Court with an open-air showing of Revenge of the Electric Car (2011), presented by Cayman Automotive. This fly-on-the-wall documentary follows four entrepreneurs on their quest to reinvent the electric car. Described by the New York Times as a .“.… rare artifact, a snapshot of a major industry shift on its way to a tipping point,.” this is Director Chris Paine.’s highly anticipated follow-up to his 2006 documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car; which was the third highest-grossing theatrical documentary of that year. The documentary will start at 7pm and is free for all to enjoy.
