Thailand: Supreme Court Backs 1.7 Million Payout
In a major victory, Thailand’s Supreme Court has ruled in favor of 14 Myanmar migrant workers who bravely spoke out about labor abuses they suffered on a poultry farm, ordering 1.7 million Baht ($53,000 USD) in compensation.[1]Yet while this is welcome news, migrant workers and human rights defenders are not in the clear just yet. New legal battles are brewing – can you add your support? [2
Thammakaset, the Thai poultry company at the heart of the case, continues to press defamation charges against Nan Win — one of the 14 migrant workers — and a Thai human rights activist Sutharee Wannasiri. Nan Win is being pursued for testifying about the abuses in a short film and at a press conference. Sutharee Wannasiri is being charged for simply sharing the film on social media. Defamation charges against victims of labor exploitation and human rights activists must stop in Thailand. Join the call to demand that speaking out will not result in retaliation.
