I am pleased to see that independent member for North Side, Ezzard Miller, says that the goal to secure equality and real democracy in Cayman politics is a long way from over. I was worried that everyone campaigning for the referendum on the subject would sit back on their laurels on the assumption they had won. Not one bit of it.

Our premier, McKeeva Bush’s surprise announcement to hold a referendum on the subject when he has spoken so publically against a referendum must have been done with much forethought. The date of 18^th July comes in the middle of the summer vacation. Are you surprised?

The premier’s speech on “educating the people” almost sounds like something from a George Orwell novel or a Communist Party leader’s idea of education – one mind – mine!

And then there is the question or questions? You can frame questions how you like and I am betting on Mr. Bush that what we see written on the referendum voting ballot will not be a simple “Yes” or “No” to a simple question. And I even expect there will be more than one question.

As I said in my Editorial (12) Mr. Bush is a wily politician and he has the advantage of the public purse in his advertising campaign for “our education” on the subject.

I also hope PPM leader, Alden McLaughlin, changes his stance very quickly on his absurd idea of having two different voting systems in one country.

I expect our premier will not labour his absurd comment that the one man, one vote, system will mean 8 fire stations or 18 constituency offices in Cayman. If anyone believed that they would most certainly need educating. And I am giving the premier the benefit of the doubt that even he doesn’t believe it.
