Cayman Islands Fire Service responds to landfill fire
From Department of Environmental Health
GRAND CAYMAN (GIS) – The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) has successfully contained the small fire that erupted at the George Town Landfill this morning (Wednesday, 6 February 2019).
The Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) received the 9-11 call at 8:09 a.m.
Fire officers with the Central Fire Station arrived on scene immediately after, and worked diligently to get the fire under control.
Currently, DEH officials are using an excavator to dig up the debris, so fire officers can ensure the fire is properly extinguished with no active hotspots. Fire crews are also using water pumps to thoroughly saturate the concerned area.
CIFS leaders are still on scene and will remain until the fire is completely out, while other off-duty fire personnel are on standby incase further assistance is needed.
Once fully extinguished, the fire prevention team will assess the scene to determine the cause of the fire. No injuries have occurred as a result of this incident.
Fire officers assure the public that the fire is not a cause for concern, but will continue to be monitored as a matter of public safety.
