CONCACAF: Monterrey rides Sanchez goal to fourth SCCL crown

2019 SCOTIABANK CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

GUADALUPE, Mexico – Monterrey is champion of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League for the fourth time after playing to a 1-1 draw with Tigres in the second leg of the 2019 SCCL Final on Wednesday night at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer in Guadalupe, Mexico.

Nicolas Sanchez’s first half penalty conversion offset a late strike from Andre-Pierre Gignac to lift the Rayados to a 2-1 win on aggregate and the club’s first SCCL title since 2013.

The home side got the breakthrough it was looking for in the 24’ when Tigres DF Luis Rodriguez fouled Monterrey FW Rodolfo Pizarro in the area.

One minute later, Sanchez stepped up and calmly converted his fourth penalty in five attempts in the 2019 SCCL, handing Rayados a 1-0 lead.

Tigres looked to respond in the second half and Gignac looked poised to level the encounter, only for Monterrey GK Marcelo Barovero to make a save for the ages.

But Tigres’ French FW could only be held in check for so long and evened the match 1-1 with a sensational goal in the 85’.

However, in the end, the Monterrey defense would hold firm to clinch Concacaf’s most coveted club trophy.CF MONTERREY V TIGRESCF Monterrey v Tigres | May 1, 2019
