Zim Integrated Shipping Services is expanding its presence in the intra-Caribbean basin trades by starting a new service with three 1,100 TEU capacity ships.

ZIM’s new weekly Central America Caribbean Express (CCS) service will commence in the second half of August and call directly at Veracruz and Altamira in Mexico, Puerto Cortes (Honduras), Santo Tomas de Castilla (Guatemala), Kingston (Jamaica), Rio Haina (Dominican Republic) and San Juan (Puerto Rico). The ships will then return via Kingston to Puerto Rico.

Although the new service will connect with Zim’s various mainline transatlantic and transpacific services over its hub in Kingston and offer seamless and highly competitive feeder connections to the above ports, its main objective is to increase Zim’s opportunities in the local market.

The company pointed to CCS as “being the best in market” when it comes to transit times in several corridors, including between Veracruz and Puerto Cortes (five days), Altamira and Rio Haina (10 days) and San Juan to Veracruz in just six days.

With nations in the Caribbean basin moving towards greater levels of economic integration and plans for a single market to be created, cargo exchanges between these countries and their immediate neighbour will expand.
