KRI shares stage with leading Caribbean dance ensemble
KRI Performing Arts School has embarked on a journey preparing for their 5th annual season of dance at the Harquail Theatre, May 24th through 27th. This event will feature special appearances by the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC) who is celebrating their jubilee year. The group which boasts 50 years of performance has seen the tutelage of choreographers such as Bert Rose, Clive Thompson and artistic director Rex Nettleford. KRI students as well as students from other dance companies and schools in the Cayman Islands will be treated to workshops presented by the NDTC during their visit.
Kirk Rowe, artistic director of KRI Performing Arts is excited about this initiative and has this to say “I am happy to share with the Cayman Islands one of the world’s renowned dance companies. It is great for our culture, especially our youth. I am looking forward to persons coming out to experiences NDTC as they celebrate 50 years of dance and KRI as we celebrate 5 years “.
The Opening Gala for NDTC will take place on Thursday, May 24th at 7:30 p.m. followed by three shows featuring both KRI and NDTC dancers on Friday, May 25th, Saturday May 26th and Sunday May 27th. The shows on Friday and Saturday will commence at 7:30 p.m. whilst Sunday’s show time is 6:00 p.m.
Tickets for the Gala are $40 for adults and $25 for children under 12 years. Other shows are $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12 years. Tickets will be available at Funky Tangs, Reflections Food For Less, KRI Performing Arts studio at Unit 2 Dorcy Place, Industrial Park, and at the Harquail Theatre Box Office.
KRI is pleased that a number of local organisations have come on board so far to sponsor the showcase: Cayman Airways; Cayman Islands Department of Tourism; Cayman National; CUC; Greenlight Re; The Jamaican Consulate; Kirk Supermarket; The Ministry of Health, Environment, Youth, Sports & Culture; The Ministry of Education, Training & Employment; National Building Society of Cayman.
KRI was founded in 2007 and currently has 60 students enrolled, ages 3 years and up. The mission of this performing arts group is to develop talent in an environment of artistic expression.
NDTC is Jamaica’s premier dance company and was founded in 1962 at the time of Jamaica’s Independence. The company has received international recognition and has completed hundreds of tours worldwide.
