UPDATE: FRI SEP 13 2017

The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) have confirmed that officers worked alongside crews from the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) throughout the night to extinguish the smoke which was detected at the George Town Landfill site yesterday (Thursday 12 September 2019). 

 Deep excavation of the affected area was conducted and it was then thoroughly saturated with water. Joint confirmation has been received that no smoke is visible at this time. 

Fire Officers will remain on scene with the DEH team until they are fully satisfied that there is no recurrence.

The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) are responding to a fire located at the George Town Landfill this evening (Thursday 12 September 2019).

A report of smoke being detected was received by the CIFS at 1:42pm and Fire Officers from the Central Fire Station were dispatched to the site. An assessment confirmed that smoke was visible in a small area to the rear of where last week’s fire was located. No naked flames were visible.

The CIFS have confirmed that their crews are working with the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) to excavate and douse a deep-seated pocket where the smoke is coming from in order to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

The Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Roy Charlton said, “My officers are working diligently to extinguish the source of the smoke. I can assure the public that we are doing all we can to minimise the impact of any smoke in the neighbouring area.’

The fire is not a cause for concern. Mr. Charlton confirmed fire crews will work with colleagues at DEH throughout the night until they are satisfied that it has been fully extinguished and thereby minimising the risk of any re-ignition.
