Bush involvement in blasting issue revealed on CITN

On yesterday’s newscast at 6pm CITN showed copies of documents they had obtained which implicated Hon. McKeeva Bush in the importation of explosives.

The documents show Midlands Acres Ltd. that operates a quarry asking Premier McKeeva Bush to assist in getting a shipment of explosives to be released from the Cayman Islands customs.

It would appear that due to an oversight the company had omitted to obtain approval from the National Roads Authority (NRA). As a result the shipment, which arrived in Cayman on 28th February, was held up in Customs.

Despite discussions with the NRA and writing two letters that had been required the explosives were not released and Midlands Acres Director, Suresh Prasad, appealed to Mr. Bush to help speed up the process in a letter of 4th March.

Mr Bush then wrote to Collector of Customs, Carlon Powery, asking if he would expedite the release of the blasting materials.

The RCIPS are currently investigating the matter. In a statement the police said, “Allegations have been made in relation to the involvement of the premier in the periphery of a recent incident where a quantity of explosives were imported to the Cayman Islands without the necessary permit”.

Mr. Bush has denied that his letter to Mr. Powery was political interference. He was trying only to help out someone.
