Hurley’s Media urges Cayman to drive safe this summer

Hurley’s Media in partnership with Britcay, National Roads Authority and Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, is urging the Cayman community to drive safe this summer through its annual ‘Drive Safe’ campaign.

In its fourth consecutive year, the Drive Safe campaign will focus on three main areas of major concern relating to driving on the roads; driving under the influence, speeding and distracted driving.

Minister of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure Hon. Joey Hew has commended all the entities for their collaborative efforts in encouraging and promoting safety of all road users.

“We have seen a decline in traffic and traffic accidents on our roads over the past few months as a result of shelter in place restrictions. However, as we reopen businesses and return to some level of normalcy, it is important that we work together to prevent road injuries, offences and death through education and other measures,” Minister Hew stated.

He continued, “The National Roads Authority has made strides in its efforts to improve safety on our roads. They have installed island-wide fluorescent lighted pedestrian crossing signs at schools and crossing locations, highway safety guardrails across Grand Cayman, speed-check signs at several areas as well as implemented a number of other initiatives. But we all have to play our part as users of the roads to keep pedestrians, joggers, motorists and everyone safe”.

Commissioner of Police, Derek Byrne of the Royal Cayman Island Police Service noted that “Speeding, driving under the influence, and distracted driving are among our major road safety concerns. This includes some particularly aggressive driving behavior by drivers of HGV’s.”

He continued, “The RCIPS is committed to making Cayman Islands Safer which includes road safety. We want to work with all partner agencies, road safety advocates and road users to make our roads safe. This road safety campaign is about getting drivers to slow down and exercise safer driving habits to prevent serious injury, Motor Vehicle Accidents and loss of life. Enforcement is a key element to any road safety strategy, but it is not the only strategy”.

“Drivers of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists all need to commit to using the roads safely.  The RCIPS is very pleased to once again partner with Hurley’s Media for this campaign,” Mr Byrne stated.

During the eight-week campaign, Hurley’s Media will be inviting key members of the community to talk on Z99, Bob, IRIE and Cayman Crosstalk about the importance road safety in the Cayman Islands.

“We will be using our powerful channels of communication and radio personalities to spread lifesaving messages about safe driving in an effort to reduce minor and fatal collisions on our roads,” said Brydie Phillips, Marketing and Public Relations Manager at Hurley’s Media.

The campaign will run until 11 September, 2020. Members of the public who are interested in becoming involved can email [email protected] or call 923-0829.
