Today’s topics: CDC Does It Again, Gruesome Death Milestone
CDC Does It Again Last week, on Friday, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued updated guidance confirming what many of us have been saying for quite some time. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes CoViD-19, can spread by large droplets AND small aerosol particles. These small particles can linger in the air for hours at a time and can clearly travel more than 6 feet. The guidance indicated that these two methods were the main ways the virus spreads and even suggested that indoor places without good ventilation may increase the spread of the virus. This all makes perfect sense to those of us who have been following the scientific literature. Earlier today, that updated guidance was taken down with a note saying that the guidance had been posted in error. This just increases the concern among medical folks that the CDC guidance is being heavily influenced by political forces instead of being guided by science. It is the same craziness we saw last week from the CDC. In August, the CDC posted guidance made by Trump political appointees that stated that people who were exposed to CoViD-19 but did not have symptoms, didn’t have to be tested. This is, of course, ridiculous since around half of the positive folks are asymptomatic. The CDC corrected that error last week with a “clarification” statement. Gruesome Death Milestone Today, the United States will cross a terrible milestone. Two Hundred Thousand Americans have lost their lives to CoViD-19. Let me say that again, 200,000 americans have lost their lives in the past 9 months from CoViD-19. Its such a large number that its hard to comprehend. That is .06% of our population dead. Many of these deaths were unnecessary had the administration handled this public health crisis correctly. The nice decline in cases that we have seen recently seems to be reversing, as expected. The US saw a 17% increase in the number of new cases in the last week compared to the previous 7 days. As the weather gets colder and we are inside and schools reopen, the number of cases will increase. Be well and take care of yourself. We will get through this together.–Dr. Stu |
