Pfizer Vaccine News Today we got some VERY preliminary good news from Pfizer about their vaccine. In an update on their website, Pfizer said that preliminary data from its large Phase 3 trial showed that their vaccine prevented CoViD-19 disease in 90% of folks in the trial. The trial had 44,000 people in it and half received the two dose vaccine and half received placebo. A total of 94 people contracted CoViD-19 during the trial. Although there was much hoopla around this announcement and the stock market went on a steep climb upward, there was no data released. That analysis is still ongoing and may take several months to complete. We don’t know which 90% were protected. Was it mostly young people or mildly sick people or was it very sick people? We need more data to know if the vaccine will really help. Once approved, it will take months to get the vaccine distributed widely to give to large segments of the population. So the pandemic is still not over and we have to get through a tough next few months but this was good news. Biden Advisory panel Today, the 13 member Biden CoVid Advisory Board was named and there are some great really smart folks on the team. I am very optimistic that science will guide us moving forward. Congratulations to my friend Mike Osterholm who directs the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at University of Minnesota. He was named ot the board. They have their work cut out for them as the number of coronavirus cases keeps climbing. The initial priorities seem right to me. They are:Increase testingUse the Defense Production Act to finally end the shortage of PPE in the USUniversal mask mandates to stop the spread of the virusScience based approach to combating the virusWow, what a breath of fresh air!! Coronavirus rapidly spreading For the sixth straight day, the US reported more than 100,000 new infections. We now have over 10 million cases in the US with 237,385 American deaths according to the Johns Hopkins dashboard. Here in NYC, the case numbers are rising. We are seeing more positive cases in our testing center. NYC reported over 1,000 new cases for the past 4 days in a row. State in the middle of the country are especially hard hit. Stay safe and try to remember to protect yourself and your families, especially as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. Be well, Dr. Stu Weiss |
