Post-Thanksgiving Spikes Well we did it. As Americans, we choose to gather together for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Many of us tried to keep CoViD safety in mind but we still had the busiest air travel period since the pandemic begin. Travel was lighter than usual but the experts are bracing themselves. Both Drs. Fauci and Birx came out on the Sunday talk shows and warned of impending increases in number. I am hopeful that folks paid attention during family gatherings but only time will tell. In two-three weeks, we will see the spike if one is coming and two-three weeks after that, we will see increases in hospitalizations. As of yesterday, over 93,000 Americans are hospitalized for CoViD related illness. Testing Question: When to get a test? Many folks have asked me when is the best time to get a CoViD-19 test if I want to know if I caught it from someone. Looking at the data, the best time is 5-7 days after exposure. At 5 days, you pick up around 95%-96% of people who will ultimately turn positive and at day 7, that percentage goes up to around 98%. The last two percent points come between day 7 and day 14, which is the end of the incubation period. So I advise people to get a test on day 6 or 7 and that will catch the vast majority of their risk. Thanksgiving Day Parade I hope that many of you enjoyed the Macys Thanksgiving day parade last week. I am proud to report that we ran an efficient program to test all of the talent, crew, staff and volunteers to make the safest possible environment in which to throw a parade. We tested over 1300 people over the five day period. We provided security and covid safety officers and health screeners to the production. It was a great partnership and it was a pleasure working with the amazing folks at Macys special events. They are consummate professionals. To top it all off, I personally got to test Santa Claus himself although I never imagined I would be sticking a swab up Santa’s nose. He was such a great sport about it and right afterwards, he gave a great big laugh and handed me a little present. Mrs. Claus was nice as well. We’re off to our next big project, helping to keep Times Square on New Year’s Eve CoViD safe so we can all watch the ball drop and bid 2020 good riddance. What a year! Stay safe, we will all get through this together. Be well, Dr. Stu Weiss |
