Cayman – UPDATE: Police identify victim in fatal collision, 19 January

Update (19 January):
Police can now confirm the identity of the victim in the fatal collision which occurred early Saturday morning, 16 January. He is Shayne Anthony Ewart, age 24 of West Bay.
The RCIPS expresses condolences to the family of the deceased.
Update (16 January, 11:50AM):
At about 12:15AM today, 16 January, officers were conducting a vehicle checkpoint on the northbound lane of the Esterley Tibbetts Highway in the vicinity of the Yacht Club Roundabout, when a green Honda Accord travelled through the checkpoint, ignoring officers’ instructions to stop. Officers activated blue lights and sirens and followed the vehicle at a safe distance, however they soon lost sight of the vehicle and the decision was made to return to the checkpoint.
At about 12:20AM, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre alerted officers to a single-vehicle collision on West Bay Road, in the vicinity of Willie Farrington Drive, involving a green Honda Accord which had collided with a house. Police and Emergency services attended the location and three occupants of the vehicle were transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital. One of the occupants, a 24-year-old man of West Bay, was subsequently pronounced dead. The other two occupants remain in hospital being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. No one in the house was injured.
The matter is currently under investigation and anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have any information is asked to contact the Traffic & Roads Policing Unit at 649-6254.

The Office of the Ombudsman is overseeing matters in the investigation potentially involving the serious harm of a member of the public who had been in recent contact with the RCIPS.

Further to the below, the roadway has now been fully reopened.

Police officers are currently on the scene of a fatal single-vehicle collision on West Bay Road in the vicinity of Willie Farrington Drive. A portion of the roadway is closed and there are currently traffic diversions in place as investigations are conducted. Traffic travelling towards West Bay is being advised to travel via the Esterley Tibbets Highway towards Batabano Road. Traffic exiting West Bay, travelling eastbound on West Bay Road, is being diverted left at the four-way stop, onto West Church Street.
