South African B.1.351 Variant Update Today, the South Carolina Department of Health and the CDC announced two confirmed cases of B.1.351 (South African) variant in South Carolina. Both were in people with no travel history to South Africa and no connection between them. One adult was from the Lowcountry region and the other was from the Pee Dee region in the northeast. This strongly suggests that the new variant, now found to be circulating in about 30 countries, is already circulating in the communities of at least South Carolina but perhaps a wider area. We do little viral sequencing in the US so we don’t have great knowledge about variants and their spread. Today also, Novavax, a little known vaccine manufacturer and one of six in Operation Warp Speed, announced that their vaccine was 90% effective against normal SARS-CoV-2 virus but in a small study in South Africa, the efficacy of their vaccine dropped to around 50% with the B.1.351 variant. This drop in efficacy is also found in the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines although reportedly not as much as the Novavax drop. We are waiting for another vaccine manufacturer, Johnson and Johnson to release its data. It has also tested its vaccine against the South African variant. According to the New York Times, the data from the Novavax trial in South AFrica also showed that many trial participants were infected with the variant even after they had already had and recovered from CoViD-19. Stanley Erck, the president and CEO of Novavax said the company would soon be testing a new vaccine tailored to protect against the variant from South Africa. He went on to say that in the face of a changing virus, they are going to have to make new vaccines. Earlier, Moderna also spoke about making a booster shot to cover the South African variant. Take care of yourself and get yourself vaccinated, if your eligible, so we can get through this together. Dr. Stu Weiss |
