71% of cyclists in Belfast have been involved in an accident

With over two thirds of cyclists in Belfast having been involved in an accident whilst on the roads, what can be done to improve cyclist safety? Out of the 15 cities surveyed, the capital of Northern Ireland reigned the most likely for cycling injuries.

What is the most dangerous city for cyclists in the UK?

It’s expected that cycling injuries are more likely to occur in more populated cities. This is due to an increased amount of traffic in these areas, and usually people rushing to get to places such as work.

In a survey conducted by medical negligence experts, National Accident Helpline, Belfast was discovered to be the most dangerous city for cyclists to travel through, with a staggering 70% of those surveyed saying that they had been involved in an accident.

The second most dangerous city surveyed was Manchester (60%), closely followed by the capital (56%).

Sheffield has been named the safest city for cycling, with only 11% of those questioned had been involved in an accident.

How can you stay safe on the road?

As a cyclist safety should be your number one priority. Unlike driving a car, with cycling you are much more exposed to the elements and therefore exposed to more serious injuries should an accident occur.

Before getting on your bike, especially if you haven’t ridden in a while, you should familiarise yourself with the highway code and ensure you know what all road markings require you to do.

Then, you should check over your bike for any faults that could lead to your brakes not working or performing as they should. Ensure that the tread on your tyres is at the correct depth so that your stopping distance is as it should be.

Wear bright, reflective clothing so that you can be seen by other road users and always have your helmet on. Sensible footwear with good grip will prevent you from slipping off the pedals and bike gloves can help with dexterity during cold weather so that you can grip your brakes effectively.

Stay alert whilst on the road, know your surroundings and aim to keep clear of any vehicles around you in case they make any sudden decisions. You should always be anticipating their next move.

Likewise, give your fellow cyclists and drivers plenty of notice when you are about to signal to change motion, such as braking and turning. Be looking ahead for potholes and puddles that could cause you to lose control of your bike.
