Cayman: Community impacts charity with change
The 5th annual Meals on Wheels Change for Change Coin Drive was at risk of being cancelled in late January due to the high rate of community cases of COVID-19 but thanks to the incredible support of the community, the event was a success despite the changes that had to be made as more and more volunteers tested positive before they were to collect donations.
A huge congratulations to the students of John Gray High School, Clifton Hunter High School, CIFEC, Calvary Baptist Academy, First Baptist Christian School, Island Montessori, ABC Kids, Red Bay Primary School came out in full force to host drives at their schools and to volunteer at locations.
We also recognize the amazing support of the companies and organizations who gave their time and resources: Davenport Development Ltd., Miss World Cayman Islands – Rashana Hydes, Miss Cayman Islands Universe – Georgina Kerford, Saxon, Sol Petroleum, Cayman National, Credit Union, CUC, Ogier, Smart Deals, Atlantic Department Store, Atlantic Kids, AA Rubis, Café del Sol, Cayman Islands Civil Servants (Ministry of Social Development, Border and Customs Control, Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Commerce and Investment). After thousands of hours counting coins, our volunteers have given us the final tally raised, $32, 792.96!! We are extremely grateful that this amount will allow us to provide 6,559 hot meals in the month of March to seniors, disabled, homebound and infirm persons across all 5 districts of Grand Ca/yman.
Meals on Wheels works hard to raise the funds needed each month in order to continue to provide meals free of charge to 330 clients in need. The organization relies on over 120 volunteers weekly to deliver the meals to clients at their homes.
Jennifer West, Meals on Wheels General Manager said “The success of the 2022 Change for Change Coin Drive is a reflection of the unending commitment and enthusiasm that our Meals on Wheels volunteers’ display on a continual basis. In our organization, every penny truly counts, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who gave what they were able to, especially during these difficult times that we all face.”
There are expenses incurred in putting on any event, and thanks to our sponsors at Davenport Development Ltd. Radio Cayman, DMS Broadcasting and other media partners who helped spread the word and cover those costs, 100% of funds raised will go straight to feeding seniors in need.
Meals on Wheels would like to thank the following locations who partnered with us to facilitate donations Foster’s Airport, Camana Bay, Countryside& Republix, A.L.
