Forced Labour The faces from China’s Uyghur detention camps Hacked police files from the Uyghur region have exposed new damning evidence of torture and forced labor at so-called “re-education” camps in China. One of the researchers involved in the Xinjiang Police Archives project says the evidence is “completely unprecedented and blows the Chinese propaganda veneer out of the water.” The leak coincides with the UN human rights chief’s long-awaited visit to China this week. Human trafficking E.U. border agency budget grows despite human rights concerns Frontex, the E.U.’s border agency that has come under fire repeatedly for human rights violations, is set to expand as it recruits for 10,000 border and coastguards. Frontex has reportedly been involved in illegal pushbacks and continues to return migrants to Libya where they are subjected to conditions of slavery. Freedom United is urgently calling on the E.U. to take responsibility for perpetuating slavery in Libya. Read more… |

Law & policy UN urged to endorse declaration on safe migration to address human trafficking Following the first international meeting since the adoption of the 2018 Global Compact on Migration, a 13-page declaration on safe migration strategies has been adopted by states with the UN General Assembly urged to follow suit. Safe migration policies rooted in human and labor rights is key for effective implementation of the Global Compact. Read more… |
