7 tips to writing a great College Essay without professional help

By Eric Ward

The college application essay can be an intimidating part of the college process, especially if you’re trying to write it yourself without the essay help from a professional writer. By following these seven tips to writing a great college essay without professional help, you can put your application and your acceptance chances in the best possible position. (There are also some great tips here on how not to payforessay, just in case you want to do it yourself).

Create an outline

Crafting an essay is like any other form of writing, it’s important that you start with a solid foundation. An outline helps you keep your thoughts organized and ensures you aren’t leaving out important details as you write. Outlines also make it easier for college admissions officers to follow along with your story and provides them with additional insight into who you are as a person, instead of simply reading words on paper.

Write your first draft

Make sure you’re in an environment where you won’t be distracted. Turn off your phone, close your email and lock yourself in your room (or somewhere else) with a laptop and plenty of snacks, water and coffee/tea. If music helps you write, play some instrumental music on low volume—nothing that would distract you from writing. And let yourself go for it! Just write whatever comes to mind. You can always edit later. The goal is just to get all those ideas out onto paper first.

Edit, edit, edit

Good college essays don’t write themselves. Before you submit your essay for review, take it apart and then put it back together with an editor’s eye. Does your essay have logical structure? Does every sentence support that structure? Does each paragraph further explain and elaborate on your thesis statement? Did you tell enough of a story to engage readers but not so much that they lose interest or forget what you’re trying to say? If you can answer yes to all these questions, then congratulations! You just wrote a great college essay! If not, keep editing until you do. Your future self will thank you later.

Save yourself time

One of the best tips for creating a great college essay is to save yourself time. You don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute trying to get something together. If you start early and give yourself plenty of time, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have a stellar essay ready when it comes time to apply. And by starting early, I mean well before senior year begins!

Get organized

If you are like most students, then college admission essays are probably not your strong suit. Don’t let that stop you from doing what needs to be done though!

Get someone else’s opinion

There’s nothing more valuable than another person’s opinion. Ask an expert in your field or someone you trust if they can look over your work before it goes live. By using these college essay writing tips, you will feel much more confident about your college application. Show it off!

If you’re applying for college, you might as well try to get accepted at some of your dream schools. Most applicants don’t get accepted into their first choice school, but there’s value in applying. If you have a strong application, then chances are someone will see something special in your work. You never know—your essay could be that spark that makes an admissions officer remember your name when he or she is filling out finalist forms (or whatever they use).

Get feedback in public

When writing an essay about yourself, it’s easy to get self-conscious and feel like you’re not doing enough. Take your writing out of that environment by posting it online and asking for feedback from complete strangers. You might be surprised with what you hear!

Take some action

Instead of sitting around, feeling stressed and overwhelmed, actually get out there and start writing. Sit down with your admission requirements—or if you haven’t even gotten that far yet, do some research—and make an outline. The point is to take action, rather than procrastinating until that all-important deadline hits. Once you have a plan in place, it’s easier to work with your schedule and meet all of your deadlines as they arise.
