Team Cayman meet Minister, Premier before Commonwealth Games

Grand Cayman, 22 July 2022 – One of the Cayman Islands youngest-ever Commonwealth Games delegates met with Minister for Youth & Sports, Hon. Bernie Bush earlier today (Friday, 22 July 2022). Twelve of the 22-strong squad and their respective coaches, lined up for a photo opportunity and a pep talk from the Minister ahead of the XXII Games in Birmingham, England (28 July – 8 August).

  Minister Bush and Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC) Chef de Mission Janet Sairsingh exchanged the national flag, a Team Cayman shirt, cap and pin.

Speaking to the athletes, the youngest being 13-years-old, Minister Bush said: “Being a former national athlete myself, I know what you all have gone through to reach to this level. A few things to keep in mind, you are representing, your family, your sport and most importantly you are representing this country. Try your best and have a good time.”

Team Cayman, headed up by Mrs. Sairsingh, later shared a photograph with Premier Hon. Wayne Panton. He shared his pride in them while congratulating them, in front of the Government Administration Building.

 Cayman’s XXII Commonwealth Games delegation consists of athletes from swimming, squash, gymnastics, cycling, boxing and track & field. Fourteen officials, including CIOC President Mrs. Laurie Powell and Secretary General Mr. Carson Ebanks, will take part in the Opening Ceremony, on Thursday, 28 July. The first of Cayman’s athletes to compete at the XXII Games will be in squash, swimming and gymnastics.
