Cayman sailor Kazimir Burt placed second in the Bronze Fleet at the RS Feva World Championship 2022

Cayman Islands sailor Kazimir Burt finished strong, placing second overall in the Bronze Fleet with a net score of 148 in a field of 60, at the recent RS Feva World Championship 2022. The regatta was held on 21-27 July at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy in Osprey Quay, United Kingdom.

“I was happy with my results,” says Burt. “I achieved second in my fleet, led for many of the races, and never placed below top three in a race.”

Conditions throughout the event provided a perfect mix of winds to challenge participants as they sailed through reasonably light, shifty to decent windy days. Burt says, “The first two or three days were very windy at about twenty to twenty-five knots of wind. As the week progressed, it started to calm down to about seven to nine knots.”

Burt took up sailing when he was six at a Cayman Islands Sailing Club summer camp and has been dedicated to the sport ever since. When asked about his time at the local club, he commented, “After a few days, I was able to sail a boat by myself, and everything moved forward from there. I still recall winning the Most Improved Sailor award when I was six! I was lucky to have a neighbor take me sailing, a huge help as he previously represented Cayman in the Olympics. I also enjoyed helping coach at the Cayman Islands Sailing club.”

“We are proud to welcome Kazimir Burt as our first Cayman sailing ambassador,” says Greg O’Driscoll, Partner and Head of Asset Management and Business Development at Grant Thornton Cayman Islands, “Kazimir is a great role model for young Caymanians interested in sailing and we look forward to supporting him as he develops his technique locally and abroad.”

Burt is going into year 11 at the Sevenoaks school in the UK and onto the sixth form sailing team. He will begin racing against university and other sixth form teams in both team and fleet racing. “Sevenoaks has a strong sailing team, the coaches are professional, and world class competitors in their own right,” says Burt.

Burt describes the event as “a really fun experience” and is “hoping to compete in upcoming events against individuals and other national teams as part of #TeamGT.”
