OMOV Referendum reaches 57% turnout at close of polls
It is not surprising the voter turnout was lower than the normal general elections because the voting public who would have voted “No” didn’t have to vote. If you stayed at home, as many of you did, it counted as a “No”.
At the close of the polls on Cayman’s One Man, One Vote (OMOV) Referendum at 6pm Wed (18) 57.67% of the register of electors voted. That accounts for 8715 electors turning out to vote. Did 7,582 voters say “Yes” ? 7,582 is the “winning”number that is needed for the referendum to be carried.
Orrett Connor, Deputy Supervisor of Elections, said the postal votes will take the longest time to count as they have to be read and checked against the official voter registration lists. He thought the final result should be announced around 12 midnight.
