Cayman Connection makes history, taking the Cayman Islands to one of the world’s largest celebrations of Caribbean music, culture, and heritage

On 28th August 2023, Cayman Connection partnered with UK based Mas band, ELIMU Mas Academy, to participate in the world-renowned Notting Hill Carnival. Cayman Connection joined ELIMU on the road as a T-shirt section with a ‘marine conversation’ theme. The global not-for-profit supporting Caymanians and friends overseas used the platform to highlight Cayman’s positive contribution to the research and protection of turtles.

The event hosting over 2 million attendees saw a diverse group of Caymanians and friends come together in London, UK, to connect and celebrate in true Caymankind style. This was the first ever appearance of a Cayman Islands specific section in the famous Notting Hill Carnival aiming to positively promote the islands overseas.

Aundre Ezekiel Ebanks (DJ Zeeky) was the first Caymanian DJ to perform as part of a Mas band at Notting Hill. Zeeky says: “To get to play at Notting Hill Carnival is a highlight for any DJ’s career, however, to do it with your people supporting you every step of the way is truly breathtaking. Seeing our Caymanian flags waving and chipping down the road, even with our national mascot ‘Sir Turtle’, and our Carnival Queen made me feel such a sense of pride that I’ve never felt before. As the first Caymanian DJ at Notting Hill Carnival, I have made history, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of Cayman Connection. Thank you for the opportunity, the best is yet to come.”

Former Miss Universe Cayman Islands (2021), Georgina Kerfood modelled a Monarch butterfly costume in the parade which formed part of the Notting Hill Carnival judging process. ELIMU Mas band (to which Cayman Connection formed part of) proudly won 2nd place overall in the Medium Adult Mas band category.

“Having a Cayman presence at Notting Hill Carnival was a truly special moment. Not only was this an opportunity for our members to connect and come together, but this day also served a much higher purpose. The interaction from the crowds of people allowed us to proudly raise awareness of our flag, our people and what it means to be Caymankind. This day marked history and we at Cayman Connection look forward to our 2024 involvement and beyond.” said Ashlea Smith, Executive Director of Cayman Connection.
