Frasers impressed with London

25 July 12

Shaune and Brett Fraser are enjoying their last few days of training as they settle in for their Olympic assault.

Both are in three events at the London Games, starting in the 200 metres freestyle with the heats and semi-finals on Sunday and the finals the following day.

Then it’s the 100m freestyle for both on Tuesday and Wednesday before Shaune goes in the 100m butterfly on Thursday and Brett the 50m freestyle.

Even though the swimming competition starts on Sat 28th they will attend Friday’s opening ceremony which promises to be the best in the Olympic movement’s history.

Doctor Sook Yin is their manager. She said: “It’s very exciting, the facilities are awesome. The boys are impressed with the world class 50m pool and the physiotherapy and anti-doping controls are working like clockwork at the moment.

“Nothing to complain about. Our Olympic village has been great. We’re looking forward to them competing on Sunday and they are in phenomenal mental and physical shape. I think this is going to be the boys’ year.”

Brett, 22, has certainly settled in quickly. “I think the whole community here in London has done an outstanding job, the pool, the village – all

of the facilities are top of the line,” he said. “It is everything I expected and everything is coming together. It’s pretty organised, the food is great, team Cayman is looking in top shape. We’re going to be pretty good this time.”

Shaune, 24, said: “These are my third Olympics so I pretty much knew what to expect and it’s been pretty comfortable adjusting in. The rooms in the village are pretty nice and the pool is really spectacular too.

“We’re going to take the next couple of days resting up and getting used to the facilities and taking it all in and get everything in gear for Sunday.”

Anthony Nesty knows what it takes to be an Olympic champion having won gold in 1988 for Suriname. Nesty is the Frasers’ head coach. He said: “Preparations are going really well. We had a nice training camp in Ireland for a week.

“This is their stage, the biggest meet for swimming, so hopefully they will relax and be ready to go on Sunday. I see them making it through the first rounds and onto the semis. And once they make it to the semis, it’s all up to them which they are capable of making to the finals. And if they make a final anything can happen.”

Ron Shillingford is the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee pool journalist who will be covering the London games for all local media.
