Cayman National Weather Service Surveillance Bulletin #1 – Friday 14 June
The National Weather Service is currently conducting surveillance of a disturbance in the region with potential implications for the Cayman Islands, beginning today Friday 14 through Tuesday 18 June 2024.
A broad area of low pressure is expected to form in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico over the next five to seven days. The area can develop into a tropical system, but the timing of when it could develop is not presently known. The development of the system would cause a reduction of moisture through the weekend but lead to an increase in rainfall on Monday 17 June.
Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac are forecasted to experience up to an inch of rainfall in the coming days.
Chief Meteorologist Kerry Powery-Linwood reminds the Cayman Islands community that the official rainy season has begun. “Increased rainfall is not abnormal for this time of year for our Islands. To cultivate a culture of readiness, the National Weather Service will be boosting its communications efforts to raise public awareness of potential disturbances and to keep the community continually engaged”, he stated.
The next surveillance bulletin will be published on Saturday 15 June at 6pm. For more details including current radar images, visit weather.gov.ky.
