Narayana Hrudayalaya & Ascension Health of US to build 2000-bed health city at Grand Cayman
Ascension Health is the largest faith based not-for-profit healthcare provider of USA with over 17,000 beds. Narayana Hrudayalaya group has 6,000 beds and performs approximately 10 per cent of the heart surgeries done in India. NH health city in Bengaluru performs the largest number of heart surgeries in the world attracting patients from 76 countries.
Health city at the Grand Cayman will be built in phases to include 2000 beds, medical university, and research institute and assisted living. This institute will serve the health care needs of 40 million Caribbean population, Latin America and Mexico. Today most of the patients from these regions go to hospitals in the USA where cost of health care is prohibitive, stated Dr Devi Shetty, chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya.
Cayman Island is an ideal destination to build medical tourism due to its proximity to the USA, stable democratic government, pleasant weather throughout the year, crime free island with first class world infrastructure, attractive tax incentives for the industry and the professionals. Medical university will help training the much needed skilled man power for health care. Cayman Island is an ideal destination for assisted living facility for the elderly population of the region due to excellent weather and high quality medical care, said Dr Anthony Tersigni, president and CEO, Ascension Health Alliance.
While Narayana Hrudayalaya has been treating several international patients, it has also made its presence to treat health conditions via telemedicine. Five years ago, ISRO connected the healthcare major to 54 cities in Africa through its Pan-African Satellite network. It also provides regular tele-consultation with Skype at Dhaka. In May 2009, Dubai based NGO, Tareeq Al Zuhoor Campaign (TAZC) has tied up with Narayana Hrudayalaya to provide medical care at subsidized rates for 2,500 Iraqi children and adults over the next one year.
