October PS Audio Newsletter

By Paul McGowan From PS Audio

Halloween’s little gremlins and goblins are readying their costumes for tomorrow night. For whatever reason, few kids in the neighborhood knock on our door so Terri and I set out a bucket of candy at the end of our driveway and head down to Pearl Street’s walking mall where merchants hand out candy. There’s a great little Japanese restaurant where we sit and watch all the crazy, costumed kids walk by as we munch on dinner.

With the first snows predicted this week, this might be the last time we can reasonably sit outside for dinner. Sigh. I am not looking forward to the cold.

Lots of reviews
We’ve recently gotten a whole lot of great reviews on our products. From The Tracking Angle’s review of the Stellar Strata Integrated amplifier, which you can read here, to multiple great reviews of our Aspen loudspeakers, like this one, we’ve been fortunate to get so much great press.

One we’re particularly proud of—Chris Brunhaver, take a bow—the Absolute Sound Magazine included the Aspen FR30 loudspeakers in their feature The Greatest Bargains in Loudspeakers, which you can read here.

Pennies From Heaven
Wow, what a great release from Octave Records. Pennies From Heaven is a wonderful collection of classic tunes we’re all familiar with like Fly Me to the MoonSummertime, and Stardust.  Saxophonist and band leader Jeremy Mohney knocks it out of the park on this one, and what fun it was to record.

The session happened in one day, and we recorded everything live. For microphones, we used a pair of Geffels (the cousins of large capsule Neumans but with better sound) for Jeremy, and for trumpeter Reid Poole, we used a really cool microphone we brought out for just this type of recording, a Cole’s Ribbon. This dynamic microphone must weigh 10 pounds and is a remarkable mic. Have a look at this beast.
Ribbon microphones are very different than the condenser microphones we use for vocals and stringed instruments. They have a fatter sound to them with a slightly rolled off top end. The reason they are so heavy is due to the massive magnetic structure that surrounds the thin ribbon (that’s the part that moves in response to sound).

 My new book
For those of you interested in my novel series, Eemians, I have just finished and launched the final book in the series, The Secret of Eschaton

For those of you new to Eemians, it’s a 4-book series that has taken me more than a decade to write. Think of it like a Davinci Code series where our heroes, Sam Sawyer and Julia Bassi, uncover evidence of an ancient modern civilization that will change the world.
If you like a fun read, do me a favor and check out Eemians. Books One through Three are the trilogy, and Book Four, They Came First, is an adventure story that takes us back 100,000 years to this ancient modern civilization. It’s fun too, but the trilogy is the one to read.

They are all available as audiobooks, paperback, and Kindle. If you like audiobooks, the series is read by one of the world’s best narrators, Edoardo Ballerini. He’s amazing. Go here for the series.
