Cayman: Severe Weather Alert – Potential Tropical Cyclone
Grand Cayman, 5AM – 3 November: The Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) continues to closely monitor a broad area of low pressure over the southwest Caribbean for potential development. The National Hurricane Center predicts an 80% chance of development over the next 2 days, increasing to an 90% chance within the next 7 days.
Current weather models suggest a tropical cyclone could form within the next 24-48 hours, with the potential for it to strengthen gradually. Given this, a Severe Weather Alert remains in effect, as severe weather conditions are likely to affect the Cayman Islands early this week.
There is still some uncertainty regarding the exact path and intensity of the system. However, CINWS expect some impacts regardless of its development. For the period 4th to 8th November, Grand Cayman is expected to receive an average of 2.0 to 3.7 inches of rainfall, with potential peaks as high as 5 inches, while the Sister Islands might see average accumulations ranging from 3.0 to 9.8 inches, reaching up to 11.2 inches in some areas. Wind speeds on average are projected to be between 15 to 20 knots, with gusts potentially reaching tropical storm force strengths.
A Flood Warning will likely be in effect for the Cayman Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday, 5th and 6th of November and possibly even Thursday 7thof November due to expected heavy rainfall. Along with this, a Small Craft Advisory is already active, and a stronger Marine Warning may be issued for these days as well. All boats should stay in safe harbour starting Monday evening.
The National Weather Service releases multiple daily forecasts, at 6am, 10am and 4pm respectively.
