From trafficking survivor to Olympic champion
From Ellie Finkelstein, Freedom United
As we reflect on gratitude this Thanksgiving and prepare for Giving Tuesday in just six days, I am sharing a powerful story that embodies why Freedom United’s work—and your support—is so critical. |

Sir Mo Farah is a four-time Olympian champion, but before the medals, he was trafficked as a child from Somaliland to the U.K. under a false name. Separated from his family at just nine years old, he was forced into domestic servitude, spending his days cooking, cleaning, and caring for other children.[1] |
“If I ever wanted food, my only way was to do what I was told. I was told, ‘If you ever want to see your family again, don’t say anything.’” — Mo Farah |
Mo’s life changed because one teacher saw his potential and talent for running and encouraged him to join a local club. Running became his outlet, his hope—and a path to freedom. |
“I know that I could never have achieved what I have without people who believed in me,” says Mo. |
Mo’s story illustrates the power of awareness and action. A single person—like a teacher, a neighbor, a friend—can change a life. Mo’s story symbolizes what is possible when vulnerable children are given a chance to thrive. It is also a reminder of the brutal reality faced by millions of children still vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking. At Freedom United, we work tirelessly to protect children from fates like Mo’s through campaigns that demand accountability, stronger protections, and the chance for every child to live free from fear. This Giving Tuesday, will you give to empower Freedom United to continue this critical work? Your contribution can help us raise awareness and inspire action to protect children from trafficking. |
