Remembering Nick Troubetzkoy
The Caribbean tourism industry mourns the loss of hotelier, developer, and architectural visionary Nick Troubetzkoy, who passed away this week while visiting London.
Troubetzkoy’s remarkable journey began in Western Canada and led him to St. Lucia in the 1970s, an island he called home and cherished deeply. His visionary spirit and fearless approach to architectural innovation were first realized in the creation of Anse Chastanet, a resort that exemplified his commitment to harmonizing with nature. This project paved the way for his crowning achievement, Jade Mountain, a globally celebrated masterpiece and a testament to his enduring love for St. Lucia and its people.
A passionate advocate for sustainability and community development, Troubetzkoy, the husband of renowned Caribbean hotelier Karolin Troubetzkoy, infused these principles into every project he undertook during his decades in Soufrière. His contributions earned him the Saint Lucia Cross and the Saint Lucia Medal of Honor, reflecting the profound impact he had on the island and its people.
Fellow St. Lucian hotelier and Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) President Sanovnik Destang paid tribute, stating: “He was an industry giant who will be missed. He left a legacy on tourism in St. Lucia and in the Caribbean. Not only by dreaming big and creating a world-class product that stretched the boundaries of what we imagined possible but also his impact on the community and on championing sustainable tourism development.”
Quotable Caribbean
“We will not regard any great power as necessarily right in a given dispute unless we are convinced of this, yet at the same time we will not view the great powers with perennial suspicion merely on account of their size, their wealth, or their nuclear potential. We will be friends of all, satellites of none.” – Errol Walton Barrow, First Prime Minister of Barbados
Medical Moment
World AIDS Day, observed on December 1, 2024, underscores the progress made in advancing human rights within the global HIV response.
This year’s theme, Take the Rights Path, places human rights at the heart of efforts to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, with communities playing a pivotal role in driving change.
The day also serves as a powerful call to action, emphasizing that safeguarding health begins with protecting rights. Adding to its significance, the annual World AIDS Day report will be released, offering critical insights into the state of the global HIV response.
